This home is veritable showcase of eco-friendly materials and systems, including one of the only residential geothermal heat pump systems in the region. A photovoltaic system designed to zero-out the home’s electric bill; a graywater system that takes water from washing machines, sinks and showers and filters it for irrigation; a curved, grass-roofed pool pavilion; and earth-friendly finishes that dazzle and charm (such as reclaimed wine barrel flooring in the wine tasting room) are just some of the home’s "green" elements. Rated at 192 points by Build It Green, the home serves as a perfect example of just how glamorous green can be. Built on one level to accommodate a child in a wheelchair, the home was designed around a main rear courtyard. To maximize natural light, it is divided into three distinct components that are separated by mini-gardens and secondary courtyards. This configuration, with its narrow massing, also allows for abundant cross ventilation, and takes advantage of the site’s solar exposure, both actively and passively. Deep sunshade/trellis features create outdoor living spaces while controlling heat gain and glare. |
